Scuba classes, Private, semi-private and small group

First off, a little personal introduction. I’ve been diving since 1976. I’m an L. A. County, NAUI, PADI, YMCA, & CMAS (World Underwater Federation) and Handicapped Scuba Divers of America (HSA) First Aid, CPR & AED Instructor.
A number of scheduling options for scuba training are available depending on whether group, semi-private or private classes are desired. Please discuss your requirements with me. Academic portions of the class are home study at your own pace with a text book, CD or DVD and your computer or online as well as one on one workshops for any subject a student finds challenging.
Two or three pool sessions of approximately three hours are usually sufficient to learn the required skills.
Four or five open water (ocean) dives are required for certification. I usually take my clients to Catalina Island on the Catalina Express and make three dives at the Casino Point Underwater Park on a Saturday. On Sunday we may take a boat to one of our many local dive destinations and usually make three to four dives. Other options may include beach dives. I am also available to accompany my clients if they prefer to do their open water dives in warmer waters.
Boat dives tend to be less strenuous than beach dives & can be more fun with better visibility & more things to see.
Please note that most of the scuba certification agencies have pretty much the same training standards for a basic scuba class. They differ in the order and the manner in which some skills and subjects are taught. Some agencies allow their instructors more freedom to personalize their courses than others. All the major agencies’ certifications are accepted worldwide, somewhat like MasterCard & Visa
I believe that when all is said & done, you will pay any full service shop that you go to for scuba training around $500 to join a class of four to eight students plus the cost of your personal gear. Some places charge a la carte. They may tell you that the class is $89 but the text book is this much & the certification card is that much & the rental gear is something else & so on. Boat diving is extra as is the cost of transportation to and from any dive site.
No matter where you go here in Southern California you will need to buy your own personal gear which consists of mask, snorkel, fins, boots & gloves. The cost of personal gear ranges from $150 - $300. As with everything you get what you pay for. However, anything you buy at a reputable dive shop will be dependable, of good quality & should serve you well. I ask that my students consult with me before they buy anything. All other necessary equipment can be rented.
Private and semi-private classes are available. Please call or email me for rates which are all inclusive with the exception of personal gear.
I hope this answers most of your questions. Please feel free to write back if anything isn't clear or you have any additional questions.

Regards,
Stephen Mendel
